Albert Tannat

Albert Tannat is a contemporary, self-taught visual artist with strong ties to Porto, Portugal. Rooted in Art Brut and Outsider Art, his raw, expressive practice spans painting, performance, sonic experimentation, and experimental printmaking. His work explores marginal realities, memory, urban decay, and fragmented human forms, drawing from both personal mythology and lived experience.

Born in the Swiss Alps, Tannat’s early life included years as a sailor on the northern seas before deserting in Tangier, Morocco, where he immersed himself in the city’s rougher districts, underground boxing rings, and local markets. These nomadic, gritty experiences shaped the visceral energy of his visual language. His work also reflects childhood memories of Porto in the late 1980s and early 1990s, a period marked by subcultures, decay, and stark social contrasts.

The pseudonym “Albert Tannat” emerged during the pandemic through a Dadaistic naming experiment inspired by marks he used on water bottles while working in the Swiss Alps. He has exhibited in Porto spaces including Pura Cal, Maus Hábitos / Saco Azul, and Officina Arara, with solo exhibitions such as Diáspora de nus e outras coisas românticas and Old Habits.

I can also make this more raw/art-world, more gallery-press-release style, or much shorter for Instagram.
